Iridescent Tenmoku Glaze, is a rare, complex, and highly prized ceramic finish originating from Jian kilns of the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279). The displays of iridescent, oil-spot like patterns with shimmering halos of natural colors, including blue, gold, and purple, often compared to the stars of a galaxy, is achieved through a precise and difficult high-temperature firing process. Each piece has its unique crystalline pattern, formed naturally in the kiln, so that no two are alike, each has its own personality.

The high iron content of Jian Zhan clay (used in Tenmoku ware) helps to soften water to create a sweet and smooth taste. While the flavor of water is enhanced, this also increases the tea’s alkalinity, making it taste smoother and sweeter. Iron is easily absorbed by the body and can help regulate the central nervous system, contributing to a soothing effect.

Jian Zhan clay (used in Tenmoku ware) retains heat well, keeping tea warm for longer.  Fired at extreme temperatures, Tenmoku cups are dense and resilient—ideal for daily use or ceremonial settings. Due to its rarity and complexity, iridescent tenmoku, are among the most revered and studied ceramics in the world. It continues to captivate ceramic artists, collectors, and tea masters globally.
